For treatment for Gaucher’s Disease.

Dr. Roscoe O. Brady was born in Philadelphia in 1923, attended Pennsylvania State University, and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1947. Before joining the National Institutes of Health in 1954, he served in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps at the National Naval Medical School as Officer-in-Charge, Department of Chemistry. Over his career, Dr. Brady has been a member of many professional societies, including the National Academy of Sciences, and has served on the editorial board or advisory board for many journals and organizations. He also is an adjunct Professor at Georgetown School of Medicine. Some of the innumerable awards Dr. Brady has won include the Lasker Foundation Clinical Medical Research Award, and the Kovalenko Medal from the National Academy of Sciences. At present, Dr. Brady is chief of the Developmental and Metabolic Neurology Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Dr. Brady's accomplishments include the identification of the metabolic defects in hereditary lipid storage disorders including Gaucher disease, Niemann-Pick disease, Fabry disease, and Tay-Sachs disease. He has applied this knowledge in developing diagnostic tests, carrier identification procedures, and the prenatal detection of such conditions. His current research interests include the development of enzyme replacement therapy for metabolic storage disorders other than Gaucher disease, as well as gene therapy for these conditions.
